It is quite a few years since Freda completed this glassy extension to a brick Victorian house for a family in Kew near Melbourne, but the quality of the design does not diminish with age. The courtyard garden has matured, the large tree which you can see reflected in the glass shades the extension on summer afternoons, and the deciduous vine which is supported on a steel frame above the north deck is now even shadier. Taking this kind of care means that it is possible to surround the Kitchen and Family space with space, light and views. Another improvement to the old house was the addition of a glass-roofed enclosed verandah on the south. Importantly, excess heat can be let out in summer through glass louvre windows, ensuring that this is a comfortable and useful transitional space while still allowing a full measure of light to enter the original side rooms of the house. Freda's concern with light and comfort have ensured that the extensions are a complement to the enclosed rooms of the original house.
